Southsea Anniversaries in The Year 2018 will be:

The 60th anniversary of:
a) The death in May 1958 of His Honour Judge Alfred Tylor QC, the last judge to sit at Ashburton Court.
The 150th anniversary of:
a) The completion in 1868 of the Ashburton Chapel/Schoolhouse in Ashburton Road.
b) Sir James Elphinstone MP re-elected [until 1880] for the 2nd time as an MP for Portsmouth.


The 160th anniversary of:
a) The award on Southsea Common on 3rd August 1858 of the VC to Howard C Elphinstone later
Major General Sir Howard Crauford Elphinstone VC., KCB., CMG., ADC and Governor to HRH
Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught, younger son of HM Queen Victoria.
The 170th anniversary of:
a) The succession in 1848 to his father’s Baronetcy by Francis T Baring MP for Portsmouth
b) The succession in 1848 to his father’s Baronetcy by James Elphinstone later MP for Portsmouth
c) The succession in 1848 to his father’s Barony by Bingham Baring as the 2nd Lord Ashburton
d) The successful suppression in 1848 by Lord Ashley [who did not succeed to the Earldom of
Shaftesbury until 1851] of a threat of serious mob violence in London as a result of his
“high standing amongst low people”.


The 180th anniversary of:
a) The Coronation of HM Queen Victoria on 28th June 1838 attended by Mr Francis T Baring MP
for Portsmouth and nephew of 1st Lord Ashburton.
